"Bringing History to Life Through Fiction."

Pam De Voe will discuss the balance between accuracy and creativity when you, as an author, must first discern which historical and cultural elements are critical to your writing and, second, how to find them in the rich treasure troves available to us for research. In January's discussion, P. A, De Voe will break down the process and show you how to prepare your story when writing about another country, culture, and time period, avoiding errors of stereotyping and cultural appropriation.


Biography: Dr. De Voe writes contemporary cozy mysteries and international, historical mysteries set in China's Ming Dynasty. Her novel Trapped was nominated for the 2017 Agatha Award for Best Middle Grade/Young Adult Book. Her book Warned won the 2016 Silver Falchion Award for Best International Fiction.

Dr. De Voe is an anthropologist who holds a Ph.D in Asian studies and a specialty in China. She has authored several stories featuring the Ming Dynasty: the Mei-hua Trilogy, Hidden, Warned and Trapped. .

She is Past President of the Greater St. Louis Chapter of Sisters in Crime, and, in addition to the Mei-hua trilogy, has written A Tangled Yarn, The Crate Beyond and Deadly Relations. No Way to Die, a Ming Dynasty Mystery is scheduled for release in February, 2019.

Kristi Jenkins, Writer and Editor


Kristi Jenkins is a writer and editor who has helped authors and businesses with everything from web site design to social media management. She served as Tucson's liaison for National Novel Writing Month, and has a long history of helping authors conquer their internet fears. In this afternoon's presentation, she'll show you how to create a simple author web site, put your best foot forward with social media, and avoid the common pitfalls of the writing life online.

The title of her talk is "Building an Author Website and Social Media Best Practices."
